New Fair Tax Mark Statement template launched

Helping small businesses to secure the Fair Tax Mark certification has always a been a core part of our mission. People have a passion for supporting local companies that pay their taxes responsibly, be they coffee shops, grocery stores or community energy providers. Moreover, small business tax avoidance is as major an issue as big business tax avoidance.

But small businesses may not always have the tax function resources of larger businesses, and the baseline financial reporting standards that apply to them are much lower. Often, small businesses are keen to secure a Fair Tax Mark, but need a little help to get over the line.

To this end, in 2017, we introduced the “Fair Tax Mark Statement” into our certification of smaller businesses. In one document, a business provides key information on beneficial ownership, financial performance and their approach to responsible tax conduct. This is co-produced and updated annually.

We’ve now re-designed our Fair Tax Mark Statement template, with Jerba Campervans giving it a road-test and Meter Manager flipping the switch over to the new circuit. The Statement provides as much information as ever, but now in a much more appealing fashion.

The Fair Tax Mark Statement details a company’s:

  • Tax Policy, pledging tax conduct in line with the spirit of tax law and shunning any artificial or aggressive tax avoidance
  • Company information, such as ownership structure and control
  • Tax position, with a full tax reconciliation breakdown and helpful explanations

It can also sometimes be used to detail other important disclosures, such as information on directors’ remuneration and related party transactions.

We hope to see more and more small businesses utilise the Fair Tax Mark Statement in the months to come. We are also planning to extend their usage outside of the UK in the near future.

“Our small businesses matter to us just as much as the largest of multinationals that have secured the Fair Tax Mark certification. We love working with them to co-produce these Fair Tax Mark Statements, which help them communicate their responsible tax conduct and their tax positions to stakeholders. Next year we plan to internationalise our business standards and enable small businesses the world over to say what they pay with pride.” – Jaime Boswell, Head of Accreditation
