On why they applied for the Fair Tax Mark

SSE’s Finance Director, Gregor Alexander says “Taxes are the way that every member of society makes a contribution to the cost of providing the public services we all rely on. That is why paying the right amount of tax matters and why SSE has a responsibility to make a fair contribution. SSE has always been open about its tax but we’ve taken our transparency to a new level following the advice received from the Fair Tax Mark.”

On the benefits to the business

“I recognise that there has been an erosion of trust between big businesses and the customers they serve. That’s why it’s so important to have a third party accredit us for tax disclosure.

“While I don’t expect SSE’s customers to celebrate the fact that their energy company pays its fair share of tax – it’s the least they can expect – I do hope our nine million customers are reassured by the independent guarantee that their energy is supplied by a company that seeks to pay the right amount of corporation tax, at the right time, and in the right place, and explains how it does that.”

On the process

“SSE has benefited from working with the team at the Fair Tax Mark. It was a fair process and our team have learnt that while transparency in itself is important, ensuring the information disclosed is accessible, is just as important.”

On the FTSE100

“SSE is proud to be recognised as the first FTSE 100 company to be awarded the Fair Tax Mark – but I hope we are not the last.”
